The truth behind GNSS number of channels!

GNSS manufacturers offer receivers with different number of channels. How important it is for the equipment performance? and how important it is when deciding which instrument/brand to purchase?

Simply put, your GNSS receiver needs 2 channels for every satellite it tracks. The question is, how many satellite can we see at a given location and time? well, as a rule of thumb, at most you will be exposed to 12 GPS satellite and 7 Glonass (At least half of satellites available will be out of view on the other side of the planet or out of view due to ground obstructions). Let's do the math (12 + 7) x 2 = 38 channels. Even in the future, adding Galileo and some other signals will increase the number to 60 or 65 channels at most.

So more channels, the better, right? not exactly. As you can conclude, 72 channels receiver will be enough to track all satellites in view, be ready for future coming signals, and search for new satellites it is predicting will come into view. So more channels the better– to a certain point. Anything beyond this point is a pure marketing game.

RIGHT ON THE MONEY - Construction Week

Philippe Akl - Construction Week Online- looks at current trends in the market for positioning and surveying solutions.

....Today, while some people may believe that the recent economic downturn has altered this trend, we have reasons - in our opinion very compelling ones - to believe that the Middle East market retains a craving for higher-end solutions.
We believe this trend is being strengthened by the tough economic situation, which is encouraging companies to pay a premium for advanced, seamless solutions, which in turn guarantee a genuine productivity boost, aimed at reducing the overall operational cost...

...The increased demand on construction GPS is a perfect indication of this dynamic...results show that GPS can increase positioning-related task productivity by 40-60% and provide cost savings of between 15-35% over conventional systems...

"Auto Topo" using vehicle mounted GPS proved to be a cost effective

One of the RTK techniques used for capturing natural surface levels is "Auto Topo" using vehicle mounted GPS on a car or quad bike. This method has proved to be a cost effective alternative to point topo based surveys for roading design projects. Digital Long sections/profiles and terrain models (DTM) can be created from the data captured, to provide designers with valuable information to work with.
This method provide 3 to 10 cm vertical accuracy depending on surface, vehicle and mounting style.. The best results are seeing on asphalt followed by tarmac, dirt and last sand. The vehicle used also can affect the results and when accuracy is important, we always recommend mounting the GPS directly above the vehicle wheel.
